When whales need to sleep, they dive to a depth of about 15 meters, take a deep breath, and position themselves in a perfectly vertical pattern. They sleep peacefully for 10 to 15 minutes, and this sleep occurs in groups of 5 or 6 whales, probably for their own safety.
A study conducted in 2008 documented the behavior of whales sleeping in a vertical position. And until 2017, no one had photographed them sleeping in this position naturally. French photographer Stéphane Granzotto, who was photographing whales in the Mediterranean for his book, managed to capture the images of these sleeping whales.
